Consumers have given car dealers a boost to confidence levels for 2013, according to new research revealing many are looking to buy, with Ford, Audi, BMW and Volkswagen topping choice lists for new and used.
A total of 38% of consumers are looking to change their car in the next 12 months, 16% in 2014 and 18 % in 2015
The motivation to buy is largely emotional rather than a need to replace their existing car and available budgets for most stretches to £10,000, with anticipated monthly payments of between £100 and £249 a month.
The research also reveals that nearly a third of respondents could be persuaded to buy new or used. Historically, many of these people bought used cars, but with the shortage of used car stock and the fantastic new car deals available, many more consumers will be considering buying a new car in 2013.
The research was carried out amongst 2,380 consumers for Motoring.co.uk, where managing director Terry Hogan said: “Our survey shows some encouraging signs for the motor industry, with a sizable number of consumers looking to change their car in 2013. Good news for franchised dealers is that consumer intentions are equally balanced between using them or an independent dealer for servicing and parts. Half of the consumers who would choose a franchised dealer would use the supplying dealer, while half would use the closest franchised dealer.
